How-To Directions for Literacy Volunteers
First, THANK YOU for taking the time to volunteer with the AITC Literacy Project. Your efforts will help improve students' literacy and understanding of agriculture. Below are step-by-step instructions to help you have a fun and successful experience.
Step 1: CONTACT YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL TEACHER
Begin by asking your local school, or a teacher you know, if they would like to have you bring the AITC Literacy program to their school/classroom. For many volunteers, this is the hardest part of volunteering, but it is an easy hurdle as most schools are delighted to have someone read to their students.
|
The program takes about 45 minutes from start to finish. Directions for the reading and activity can be downloaded and printed out for them to review. Let them know the program is free, all materials are prepared, and each class receives a copy of the book. Invite them to visit AITC’s web site or contact us for more information at 541-737-8629
Step 2: Determine Number of Students
Ask how many students/classes to whom you will be reading. Then let AITC know the number of students and classes you will be reading to at least two weeks ahead of time. AITC will prepare and mail you the correct number of bracelet packets and books. You won’t have to do any materials preparation.
Step 3: Get the Lay of the Land
Ask if there is a special reading spot in the classroom that you will be using. Some schools have special projection equipment, or there may be a student with special audio needs. If you have a chance, visit the class briefly beforehand. Please arrive 15 minutes early on volunteering day.
|
Step 4: Practice Reading and Activity Directions
Practice the story before you get to class, ideally reading it to children. Also review the activity sheet included in the packet of materials. We suggest sharing a copy of the activity with the teacher. Activity directions can be downloaded from the AITC web site. Many volunteers work in teams of two - one volunteer reads while the other leads the activity.
|
 |
Step 5: Teacher Packet
Please give teachers the AITC information materials packet (this will be mailed to you with the activity supplies). Explain there are several additional activities they may want to use with their students. The extra lessons can be used now, or in the fall with apple units. Please let them know that ALL the materials are FREE to Oregon teachers.
Step 6: Teachers Love Stories Too
Let the teacher relax and enjoy the book and activity with the students. Thank the teacher for the opportunity to visit the class and leave on time. Classrooms run on a tight schedule.
|
 Step 7: Paperwork
While paperwork is not fun, it does help AITC secure funds to sponsor future literacy projects. The simple one page form included in your packet of materials needs to be completed for each class and be mailed to the AITC offices by May 31 2009 at 305 Strand Agriculture Hall, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331. Additional copies can be downloaded from the AITC web site. |
