About This Year’s Book:
Apples to Oregon: Being the (Slightly) True Narrative of How a Brave Pioneer Father Brought Apples, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Grapes and Cherries (And Children) Across the Plains by Oregon author Deborah Hopkinson.
Apples to Oregon is a tall tale celebrates
the heroic journey of a pioneer family and their infant orchard over the long and often dangerous Oregon Trail.
Apples to Oregon is a perfect fit for celebrating our state’s 150 th birthday (February 14, 2009). The delightful illustrations are sure to capture the imaginations of students of all ages.
The book is based on the true story of Henderson Luelling, who in 1837 brought his family of ten, plus 700 of his best fruit trees and berry bushes, over the Oregon Trail to the Portland area. His was the first nursery in the state.
How the Literacy Program Works

The 2009 AITC Literacy Project begins during National Ag Week, Monday, March 16 and run through May 31.
* Start to finish, the literacy project takes about 45 minutes.
- Literacy volunteers set up times to visit their local schools
- Volunteers read to students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
- Following the reading, volunteers do an activity with students and share their experiences in agriculture.
All activity materials are completely prepared by AITC, plus classrooms get to keep a copy of the book.
Volunteer Training Sessions

Training sessions will be held at the following locations:
* March 7 - Oregon Women for Agriculture State Conference, Corvallis
* March 22 – Oregon FFA State Convention, LaGrande
